Tie-and-Dye explained by Mali’s master textile dyers: Producing indigo dye from green indigo leaves is a long and demanding process. The tank can be kept alive for months if carefully maintained, over time the resulting bruises become lighter and brighter. Dark indigo can best be obtained by several immersions in a young vat. The tie-and-dye process is exactly that: there are hundreds of different ways to tie a fabric before dipping it to create hundreds of designs.
